From Jigna to Tour De France stage winner. Biniam Girmay the world renowned Eritrean cyclist. Has been breaking records in the cycling world. Becoming the first African ever to win a Tour De France stage. Going on to win three of them in his second year participating in the Tour. Earning himself a green jersey, also the nickname bini the biker.

Cycling is one of the biggest sport in Eritrea. It has been deeply rooted in the country. Dating all the way back to the Italian colonization. The sport was introduced in 1898, initially used for postal deliveries in Massawa. Over time though it gained its popularity leading to the establishment of a cycling federation in 1936. The first organized race wasn’t until 1937, however though Eritreans were excluded from the competitions.

When Eritrean competitors were finally allowed to compete in 1939. A man by the name of Ghebremariam Ghebru won the race, shattering the myth of Italian Fascist supremacy. Today Eritrea is considered one of Africa’s top cycling nations with a passionate fan base. Cycling clubs began to start forming in Asmara. Leading to the country to host their own races. Which they call the Tour Of Eritrea
